Nation has big need for transplant lungs

Only about 1,400 human-to-human lung transplant procedures are performed each year in the United States, and 451 people in 2011 either died while waiting for a transplant or became too sick to qualify for a transplant, according to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.

Dr. Jeffrey Platt, a researcher at the University of Michigan who focuses on experimental surgery, transplantation and related fields, says attempts have been made to use pig organs in humans, but not successfully yet.

The estimated cost of a single lung transplant in 2011 was $561,200, which includes pre- and post-transplant evaluation, medication, procurement of the
