PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. -- A local man is stuck in the middle of a healthcare nightmare. He had insurance - but it's run out, and now his only hope of getting a life-saving surgery lies in the hands of his desperate family.
"He's got days, weeks - not much longer. We're just calling for any help we can possibly get," said Fred Kuhn.
Fred Kuhn and his sister Nancy are doing everything they can to save their brother Jim. Jim is in the intensive care unit at JFK Medical Center in Atlantis dying of heart failure. His only hope of staying alive is a surgery that no one here can perform.
"They can't do the surgery. They're doing all they can," said Kuhn.
Jim eventually needs a heart transplant, so a transplant hospital is the only place where Jim can get a special device called an LVAD implanted in his heart to keep it pumping.
"Our cardiologist worked with the maker of the LVAD device and they got that donated for free. We've got a surgeon in Tampa who's willing to do the surgery pro-bono. What we're looking for now is just the hospital," said Kuhn.
