A SUPERB response from readers means we are closing in on 250 sign-ups to the Mercury 1000 organ donor register campaign.
Since we started our drive with the story of Aisling O’Regan, who died aged 20 awaiting a double lung transplant, 3,374 people have opted into the organ donor scheme across the Mercury patch.
But simply raising awareness of the issue is the most important aspect as it is families who have the final say on whether organs are donated.
A spokesperson for NHS Blood and Transplant said: “We would like to thank all those who have showed their support for organ donation and signed up to the NHS Organ Donor Register so far.
“It's fantastic that so many people have signed up, but the bigger challenge for us is getting people to talk to their families about their wishes after death.
“Three people die every day whilst waiting for an organ transplant so it’s important that those who do want to donate their organs not only sign up to the register but tell their next of kin about their wishes and openly discuss organ donation with their family and friends.”
