Thousands of Facebook users have signed up to be organ donors, thanks to a new feature on the social networking site that makes it easier to register.

The new option was announced by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg as a way to boost the number of potential organ donors.

Hadie Bartholomew of Cleveland-based Lifebanc says the Facebook promotion has been wonderful and that last week in Ohio they had a 380% increase in people registering their decision to be organ or tissue donors online.

The Facebook feature allows users to share their decision to be an organ donor on the website. A link on the site connects to online donor registries.

Bartholomew tells Newsradio WTAM 1100 that the Facebook presence allows people to show pride in being an organ donor, which will encourage others to sign up and save lives.
