Behind Sarah Hyland's Kidney Dysplasia Diagnosis

Every Day Living

The 'Modern Family' star recently opened up about her battle with kidney dysplasia and the transplant surgery that gave her 'a second chance at life.' Here's what you need to know about the disease.

WEDNESDAY, May 16, 2012 — Sarah Hyland may play a carefree teen on TV, but in real life the Modern Family actress is neither carefree nor a teen.

Hyland, 21, recently revealed that she has been quietly waging a battle against kidney dysplasia for the last 12 years — a battle that left her tired, sick, and in need of a transplant, which she got just a few weeks ago from her father. Before that, she told Good Morning America, “I would be in a lot of pain a lot of the time. If I didn’t get, like, 12 hours of sleep, it felt like none at all.”

That kind of suffering would be difficult for any child, but it posed some especially unique challenges for Hyland, who was diagnosed at the age of 9, already five years into her blossoming acting career. Not wanting to give up roles on shows including Law & Order: SVU, Lipstick Jungle, and, of course, Modern Family, Hyland had to find ways to hide her increasing discomfort from the camera.

“You know, if you’re sick, you still go to work,” she explained on GMA. “And in between takes, you sit down, or you lay your head down or something.”
