Mayor Jeannette McCarthy will present a proclamation on Thursday, April 19 declaring April as "Donate Life Month" in Waltham as part of an initiative to encourage citizens to donate organs.
The proclamation presentation will occur at 2 p.m. at Waltham City Hall. State Senator Susan Fargo, a Lincoln Democrat who also covers Waltham, will also attend the ceremony.
Most people register to donate at the Registry of Motor Vehicles, said Matt Boger, spokesperson for New England Organ Bank, which is the federally-designated nonprofit charged to procure organs for transplant.
“Statistics show that 99.8 percent of all Massachusetts residents who designate themselves as an organ and tissue donor do so at the RMV," Boger said. "They play a very important party in the donation process.”
Although the vast majority register to donate at the RMV, anyone can register 24 hours a day, seven days a week either on the RMV website, or at www.donatelifenewengland.org, according to Boger.
