Mason Zenner and his family had a lot to be thankful for Sunday as they gathered for dinner at Granite City Food and Brewery, his favorite restaurant.
They were celebrating the three-year anniversary of his heart transplant. Mason, who will turn 4 in August, was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a weakening of the heart muscle, before he was even born.
But to look at Mason today, playing football with his parents, Matt and Amanda Zenner of Cedar Rapids, cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes or watching Thomas the Tank Engine, you’d never know he spent his first six months at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics fighting for his life.
