LOS ANGELES—The Skirball Cultural Center presents the Los Angeles debut of ENGLAND, an award-winning work by British playwright Tim Crouch, in a five-night engagement beginning Wednesday, November 9 through Sunday, November 13. Created specifically for gallery spaces, the play features two actors playing a single character: a disarmingly cheerful gallery tour guide. As the tour guide addresses the audience directly, the narrative unfolds in reference to the exhibition that surrounds them.
At the center of the story is the grateful recipient of a heart transplant who travels 4,000 miles to the developing world to thank the organ donor’s widow and present her with a gift. However, as the play makes clear, much more than a life has been lost. Exposing the stark contrast between the pursuit of health and happiness and such endeavors’ hidden costs, ENGLAND presents observations about transactions and translations, culture and commerce, of one thing being placed inside another without thought for the consequences.
