12-year-old in need of heart transplant urges people to visit new online registry
PENETANGUISHENE – Gabrielle Sager just celebrated the 10th anniversary of her heart transplant.The occasion was a little bittersweet, however, as the Penetanguishene resident needs another heart.
The 12-year-old was diagnosed two years ago with a long-term form of rejection called coronary artery disease, a narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart.
Gabrielle’s story began when was born with a congenital defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which means her heart’s mitral valve, left ventricle, aortic valve and aorta did not develop completely.
“It was detected the day after she was born, and we had to decide what route we wanted to take to go forward,” recalled her mother, Kelly Bald.
One option was a heart transplant, but they rejected that choice in favour of a series of three operations.
