Families reflect on importance of organ donation at LOPA tournament in Pineville

The Town Talk | Warren Hayes

PINEVILLE -- Lauryn McGee of Pine Prairie is like most teens, excited about obtaining a driver's permit.

But the 15-year-old was more excited about registering to become an organ donor while getting that permit.

McGee honored her deceased brother, 18-year-old Nicholas Jordan Aucoin, at the third annual Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency (LOPA) Softball Tournament at the Ward 9 SportsPlex Baseball Fields in Pineville on Saturday.

McGee stood next to a picture of Aucoin, who died in November 2010 after a vehicle crash, and said her brother was her biggest hero.

"Nicholas was my hero, and I miss him a lot," she said. "I wanted to honor my brother and being an organ donor is a good way to honor his memory."

Misti Aucoin, Nicholas' stepmother, hugged McGee and told her that Nicholas would be proud of her.
